Pet care for dogs, cats, and busy families

Pet sleep and rest: how much do dogs and cats need?

Sleep is when your pet's body repairs tissue, consolidates learning, and regulates stress hormones. Understanding normal sleep patterns makes it easier to notice when something is off.

Dogs sleep between 12 and 14 hours per day on average, with puppies and senior dogs often sleeping 16 to 18 hours. Cats sleep even more — typically 12 to 16 hours per day, and sometimes up to 20 hours for senior or inactive cats. This level of rest is completely normal and supports their overall health. Unlike humans, pets cycle in and out of sleep frequently throughout the day rather than consolidating rest into one long period.

Creating a comfortable, consistent rest environment matters. Dogs feel most secure in a defined space — a crate, bed, or quiet corner that is predictably theirs. Cats prefer elevated resting spots and often rotate between several locations throughout the day. Avoid placing pet beds near heating vents, drafts, or high-traffic areas where rest is frequently interrupted. Young animals especially need uninterrupted sleep for healthy neurological development.

Changes in sleep patterns are worth noticing. A pet sleeping significantly more than usual, struggling to get comfortable, or seeming restless during normal sleep periods can indicate pain, illness, anxiety, or an environmental stressor. Sudden changes in where or how long your pet sleeps are worth mentioning to your veterinarian, particularly in senior pets where cognitive changes or pain may begin subtly through altered rest behavior.
